A learner placed at B1 (75) does not have the same needs as a learner at B1 (0). Placing them in the same group holds some back and discourages others. The quarter-level score enables the formation of genuinely homogeneous groups, with a documented and objective basis for decision-making that standard CEFR levels simply cannot provide.

The quarter-level score makes it possible to compare candidates within the same CEFR level — something a global result cannot provide. Two candidates both showing a B2 are not equivalent if one is at B2 (0) and the other at B2 (75). This distinction can be decisive for roles where language is an operational requirement: international customer service, positions involving foreign partners, or multilingual team management.

Yes. We conducted a reliability study in collaboration with the Forem, the public employment and vocational training service in the Walloon Region of Belgium. Across 18,026 tests taken twice — once on our platform and once by professional trainers — the difference in results was less than half a level in 86% of cases. This level of agreement is particularly significant given that our test did not assess spoken production at the time of the study, unlike the trainers. Since then, we have been assessing oral expression through ELAO+.

Yes. We identify an A0 level, reserved for complete beginners who have not yet acquired the minimum foundations assessed by the European framework. Most tools on the market ignore this level, as the CEFR officially starts at A1. This detection is particularly useful in contexts with highly heterogeneous audiences: newly arrived migrants, industrial staff with no prior language training, or students at the very beginning of their learning journey.

Yes. Because we work from a continuous percentage base, we can adapt the conversion scale to much finer frameworks. We developed for the Alliance Française of Atlanta a reference framework comprising 35 to 36 sub-levels, with up to eight bands within a single CEFR level (B1.1, B1.2… B1.8). This kind of adaptation is not possible with tools that calculate a global level directly.

These four values indicate where the learner sits within a given level. A score of 0 means the level has just been reached. A score of 25 indicates the level is consolidated. A score of 50 places the learner halfway towards the next level. A score of 75 signals that the next level is almost within reach — this is often referred to as a “strong level” band.

ELAO does not calculate a CEFR level directly. Our algorithm first generates an internal score expressed as a percentage, on a scale of 0 to 100. This score is then converted into a position on the European framework using a conversion scale defined by our pedagogical team. In the standard configuration, each CEFR level is subdivided into four bands — 0, 25, 50 and 75 — which is what we refer to as the quarter-level score.

ELAO uses adaptive mechanisms which provide accuracy to within a quarter of a level and assess reliably and accurately participants’ oral levels. As the test progresses, the questions are automatically adjusted based on the level of the person being tested. The person taking the test answers between 80 and 116 questions from a pool of 800 questions in each language.

The ELAO test assesses different skills: grammatical structures, active (or productive) vocabulary, passive (or receptive) vocabulary and listening comprehension. You can also choose to include a general and/or professional language assessment.

ELAO is a digital tool designed to assess a person’s language level in 6 languages (the languages most commonly used in Europe: French, English, Dutch, German, Italian and Spanish). Participants answer a range of questions (between 80 and 116) which are drawn from a pool of more than 800 questions per language.
